Notes on the Fjord Series

Whilst on a short residency in Norway, I started experimenting with plastic and polystyrene containers as objects to wrap my prints around.

I moved on to use oval box lids and ‘found objects’, and to create my own shapes as supports.

These supports have become integral to many works, having an inherent beauty themselves. I sometimes make marks on their surface with a pencil or brush.

You’ll notice that quite a few works in this series are diptychs. This pairing helps to emphasise both the work itself, and how it relates to the surrounding space. One half often echoes shapes, colours and forms in the other.

Norway’s monumental fjords are one of my influences in this series; particularly the drama played on them by a change of light, one half often shadowing the other.

Studio with boxes, tubs and half-painted works.
